Canelo Alvarez defeats Gennadiy Golovkin in trilogy bout

First of two historic middleweight giant clashes rescored

The first battle between Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin held on September 16th, 2017, ended in a controversial draw, with many believing Golovkin had done enough to win. The rematch, which took place on September 15th, 2018, was also a close affair, with Alvarez winning by majority decision.

In the trilogy bout, which took place on September 17th, 2022, Alvarez left no doubt, dominating Golovkin from start to finish and winning by unanimous decision. The judges' scorecards read 116-112, 115-113, and 115-113, all in favor of Alvarez.

The victory gives Alvarez the undisputed super middleweight championship and improves his record to 58-2-2. Golovkin, meanwhile, falls to 42-2-1 and may now consider retirement.
